Standard Practice for Conducting a 5-year Review of a Committee G03 Standard

Importancia y uso:

5.1 It is the intention of this practice, in addition to the Form and Style for ASTM Standards, to assist persons revising standards in Committee G03 to ensure that all required elements are included and that the revised document is presented in the most user-friendly manner possible.

5.2 This practice is intended for use by Committee G03 when test methods, practices, guides, classifications, and specifications under its jurisdiction are revised because of technical changes or upon 5-year review.

5.2.1 Terminology standards are not covered by this practice since they do not include any sections other than the list of definitions.

5.3 This practice is intended to be used to avoid submitting a re-approval where no updates are made, and the previous version is automatically renewed.

5.4 A thorough 5-year review keeps G03 standards up to date and makes sure there are new dates for the revisions. The review process is automatically scheduled by ASTM in the 4th year after the last revision. A member of the subcommittee is designated as the reviewer and will use this practice to assist in that review.

5.5 Even if there are no technical changes to a standard, there are many other content items that must be checked to ensure they are still relevant and available. Often times when there are no technical changes required, the standard will be submitted for a re-approval ballot. This means that other relevant and important information is not checked.

5.6 Many items in an ASTM Standard become obsolete over time. It is good practice to ensure all the important information is kept up to date.

5.7 Some test methods and practices use techniques and apparatus that does not change. It is essential that even when methodology does not change, the other sections in the standard are maintained.
